Description

GDC American Extraction Forceps

GDC American Extraction forceps are used along with elevators to extract teeth. Each extraction forceps is designed for a particular area of the mouth. The beaks are designed to fit around the cervical portion of the tooth. Pointed beaks are designed to grip the furcation area. Tooth Extracting forceps are used to extract teeth designed for use in specific areas of the mouth.
The beak is shaped to conform snugly to the contour of the tooth. This makes it easier to reach different teeth effectively. The forceps handles are the long side of the lever, the beaks on the tooth are the short side of the lever, and the hinge acts as a fulcrum. The force on the handles is magnified to allow the forceps to grasp the tooth with great force.

Direction to Use

Direction to Use

  • Maxillary forceps must be held in a ‘palm up’ position and mandibular forceps must be held in a ‘palm down position.
  • The position of the patient, dental chair, and operator is critical for a successful extraction procedure.
  • Force is delivered with the arm and shoulder and not with the wrist movement.
  • For a maxillary extraction, the occlusal plane should be about 45- 60 degrees to the floor. The height of the chair should be such that the height of the patient’s mouth is at or slightly below the operator’s elbow.
  • For the extraction of mandibular teeth, the patient should be positioned in a more upright position so that when the patient opens their mouth widely, the occlusal plane is parallel to the floor. The chair should be lower than for the extraction of maxillary teeth.
  • The goal of the forceps use is an expansion of the bony socket by the use of wedge-shaped beaks and the removal of teeth from the socket.
  • The forceps are applied in five major motions: Apical, Buccal, Lingual, Rotation, and Tractional forces for delivering the tooth from the socket.
